India's fear factor games
The Commonwealth Games, hosted this year for the first time ever by India and due to begin in Delhi on October 3, are beset by a host of problems:
- serious security concerns;
- a collapsed pedestrian bridge;
- a partially collapsed ceiling at a sports venue;
- an outbreak of dengue fever;
- allegations of substandard hygiene, including stray faeces at the athletes' quarters.
With the opening ceremonies rapidly approaching it looks like the Delhi games will be one of the greatest sporting fiascos ever.

The Indian speaker on the BBC was hard to understand but, I'm sure he said the piece of ceiling that "collapsed" was "two feet by two feet". If that is so, it sounds like a panel fell out.
Never mind the drinking water.
I'm optimistic about this. Before every Olympics and Commonwealth Games that I recall since the Sydney 2000 games, there's a bit of pre-emptive schadenfreude. It's as though we want them to fail so we maintain the crown for "best games ever".
London 2012 is already shaping up to be a disaster. Or not.
I am a big believer in "it'll be alright on the night".
Then again, those Pakistanis...
Dan,
Quite right - I think these Games will also turn out OK.
Sure, the bridge collapse was terrible, but from what I saw on TV news pics, the other supposed calamities weren't that bad. The "ceiling collapse" really was just like one of those panels falling from your regular office ceiling.
