MENTAL HEALTH QUESTIONED
An article in the LA Times makes much of the impact on mental health of military service in Iraq:
One in eight soldiers returning from service during the first year of the Iraq war was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder or some other mental illness, according to the most comprehensive study yet of the effects of war on the mental health of veterans. The article fails to mention the prevalence of mental illness in the general population:
The current prevalence estimate is that about 20 percent of the U.S. population are affected by mental disorders during a given year. So, the prevalence of mental illness among Iraq veterans is neither unusual nor unexpected.

So, in other words, about 20 percent of the general population suffers from some form of mental illness in any given year and only 12 percent of soldiers returning from service in Iraq are diagnosed with some sort of mental illness. Given that the LA Times sort of intellectual probably believes a person must start out crazy to join the military, wouldn't that suggest that being in the military cures some people of mental illness?
