PROGRESSIVES OPPOSE PREGNANCY HELPLINE
Health Minister Tony Abbott today announced the awarding of a contract to McKesson Asia Pacific Pty Limited for the operation of the 24/7 National Pregnancy Support Telephone Helpline. Fantastic, pregnant women, especially those experiencing an unwanted pregnancy, deserve support.
Well, not so fantastic for progressives, who are aghast that McKesson will be supported by Centacare, an organ of the Catholic church. Lefties are worried that the church's anti-abortion stance will somehow infiltrate the program possibly causing those contemplating abortions to change their minds.
Larvatus Prodeo hard line feminist in residence Anna finds the contract "completely appalling and unacceptable." Tim Dunlop thinks the contract is yet another indication of Howard government bias. Greens Senator Kerry Nettle is worried that the helpline will be a right-to-life organization. Australian Democrats Senator Natasha Stott Despoja is worried that the helpline will pursue the Health Minister's agenda of seeing "the number of abortions come down."
It apparently isn't important that Centacare will have no direct role in counseling, providing nothing more than training and support services for McKesson. Lefties simply despise religion and believers (Islam and Muslims excepted) and aren't about to have anyone do anything that might contribute to the saving of one otherwise doomed baby.
As an aside, I'm always perplexed by the a-woman-must-be-in-control-of-her-own-body pro-abortion argument: shouldn't a mature woman also be in control of her own body at the time of conception? There really is no excuse for a responsible woman experiencing an unwanted pregnancy.
