China's carbon dioxide emissions growth nullifies decreases elsewhere

Many experts assumed the faltering world economy would lower global carbon dioxide emissions. Wrong, continuing growth in the developing world – China and India in particular – offset decreasing emissions elsewhere, with China's 6.1 tons of carbon dioxide emitted per capita surpassing France (6 tons) but still below the 7.9 ton EU average.

Despite China's reportedly heroic efforts to shift to environmentally friendly energy sources, its fossil fuel emissions increased by 9 percent.
